Being frugal helps us save money. But there’ll always be important things we need to spend our money on. We just have to prioritize our needs and decide on what’s more important for our frugal lifestyle.
So what are the things frugalists should spend on to save money in the medium term and long run?
These are the things that a frugalist like me will always buy as long as I can afford it. Get the list below and see if they fit in with your family’s needs too.

#1 Frugal Spending on Car Maintenance
a) Think you’re being frugal by ignoring the need to change your motor oil? Wrong!
You need to change your engine oil and filter at the intervals shown in your owner’s manual. Make sure you use the correct viscosity oil as stated in your manual.
Paying for regular oil changes, typically every 6 months, is very cheap insurance to avoid a very costly engine repair or replacement – that can cost you upwards of $2,000! Oil is relatively cheap compared to a replacement engine or major engine repairs.
b) Delaying changing your worn out tires? Don’t! Your life and safety are of utmost importance.
Avoid saying money by buying used tires or tires of an unknown brand. They may not be safe – skidding on wet or icy roads is a definite health hazard. It’s better to pay a bit more for tires of a known brand.
c) Are you ignoring any warning lights on your dashboard? Don’t.
For example, a brake warning light that is on may be warning you that there is a serious problem in your brake system, such as low brake fluid due to a leak, or worn brake pads.
This is not a time to be “frugal” by ignoring the warning light. Take you car to a good garage to have a qualified technician look at it. Don’t risk your life and safety by “saving” money.
#2 Free Range Eggs
This is one of the most affordable health foods. Ideally, eggs should be organic and free range, but eggs of this quality costs 70 cents each at my location. So my compromise is to buy free range eggs at 33 cents each.
WebMD says that for eggs to be certified organic by the US Department of Agriculture, the chicken feed has to be produced on land on which toxic fertilizers and pesticides had not been used for 3 years or longer. Also, the hens have to be free from hormones, vaccines and antibiotics.
#3 Frugal Spending on Free Range Chicken
Corn fed chicken tends to have lower levels of healthy Omega 3 fatty acids and higher levels of unhealthy Omega 6 fatty acids.
So it’s better to pay relatively more for free range chicken that has not been fed with corn. Free range chicken is healthier for you and your family.

#4 Quality Footwear
I had my fair share of cheap shoes that lasted a couple of months. A co-worker’s pair only lasted a week!
Invest in quality shoes. My latest pair of Skechers has lasted me more than 3 years now, despite being worn almost daily. My son’s Asics shoes, bought at a sale, is comfortable and long lasting – great value that saves money in the long term.
We’re on our feet most of the time when we’re out, so it’s important we have good quality shoes that support our feet, heel and tendons.
Wearing good quality shoes can prevent foot injuries which can hurt badly and lead to costly medical bills.

#5 Frugal Spending on Rubber Plants
According to Healthline, NASA in their research found that houseplants help reduce indoor pollution, especially in winter. Buy indoor plants that reduce indoor pollutants and give you fresher air, such as Rubber plants and Peace Lilly
I like Rubber plants as they’re so easy to look after. They only need watering twice a week. In return, they are great at filtering the indoor air we breathe in. I have four lovely Rubber plants, each taller than me.

#6 Quality Skincare
As our skin is the largest organ in our body, covering about 20 square feet, looking after our skin is important.
Always check the ingredients of lotions and creams. If they’re full of chemical names, it’s best to give them a miss.

#7 Frugal Spending on a Good Mattress
Investing in a good mattress is just as important for your health. We spend about a third of our life asleep. Besides helping you get a good night’s rest, a quality mattress gives your body the needed proper support.
It’s a mistake to make do with an old, worn or low quality mattress. Invest in your health and sleep in comfort, by upgrading your mattress to a quality one that has individual pocket springs.
Depending on size, a quality mattress costs between $140 and $290 at Walmart. Let’s do the Math. The $290 mattress that lasts 10 years costs you only $29 each year, or only $2.40 each month! This is surely an excellent investment for nightly comfort and better health.

#8 Organic Vegetables and Fruits
There’re 3 vegetables I’ll always buy organic: potatoes, carrots and celery. They soak up toxins easily, and non-organic ones are treated with many types of pesticides – not good for your health.
Most folks love strawberries and blueberries, but so do insects and birds. Always buy organic strawberries and blueberries as these are not sprayed with harmful pesticides to deter and kill pests.

#9 Frugal Spending on Two Cars
Having 2 cars is indispensable for my family as it gives us more freedom and saves us time. Some families prefer to have one car and it can work well for them.
I would have liked to have one car to reduce motoring costs, but it’s not feasible for our family.
We reduce our car running costs by combining our car trips on certain days of the week.
We save money also because we run economical cars that were bought used and in great condition.
Family sedans that are reliable safe and very fuel efficient are the way to go.
You may pay a bit more to buy a good quality used one that’s less than 10 years old, but you’ll get far better safety features like greater crash protection and multiple airbags. You’ll also save more money on gas and minimize repair costs
(But never ignore or avoid needed regular maintenance like oil changes and brake inspection/servicing).
#10 Electric Toothbrush, Dental Floss and Fluoride-free Toothpaste
According to Harvard Medical School, poor dental health is closely linked to more heart problems. So it really pays to maintain good oral hygiene.
In the long run, you minimize health risks and save on hefty medical bills. Prevention is the best insurance.
#11 Frugal Spending on Organic Dark Chocolate
Good news for chocolate lovers! They’re both delicious and healthy.
Go for those that are organic and contain at least 70% of cocoa.
Dark chocolate contains antioxidants that may give us additional health benefits such as reducing heart disease risks and reducing inflammation in our bodies.

#13 Frugal Spending on Algae Oil capsules and Multi-Vitamins
Fish oil capsules can cause excessive nose bleeds for those who are prone to nose bleeds as it thins our blood. In addition to this, there’s a strong risk of mercury contamination.
Although I came across a manufacturer who uses molecular distillation to remove toxins, I’m still not totally convinced.
My solution is algae oil from marine algae.
It’s rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. The main source of Omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil actually comes from algae.

#14 Quality Convenience Foods
Are you surprised?
Yes, it’s more economical to cook from scratch. But life can get busy on certain days of the week. Instead of dining out, I take the middle route.
I’m always on a constant look out for free range chicken nuggets and crumbed fish fillets that are on specials.
Frozen crumbed nuggets work out to be a cheaper alternative for my family since I avoid fish and chips.
The cooking oil used to fry the fish fillets and chips have been reused so many times they’re practically black. Can you imagine what they’ll do to our health?
#15 Premium Canned Sardines and Red Salmon
When fish prices are high at certain times of the year, I’ll vary our family’s menu with canned fish.
These are tasty and healthy. At my location, the only wild caught salmon available is in cans. Learn more by clicking on the pic below.
As you can see, frugal spending can save us money when we know what to spend our money on.
