Aren’t you tired of the clutter? I don’t just mean the material things.
We often forget about our mental and emotional space being cluttered with tons of different things as well. Let me share this quote.
“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” – Confucius.
Don’t you think it truly sums up what’s happening in our world today?
If we don’t complete what we set out to do, we get upset with ourselves. Our sense of well-being and control are diminished.
The best solution lies in this wise saying – Make Life Simple. Only then can we truly live a meaningful life.
In our quest for a happier lifestyle, we embrace minimalism and simple living. But are they really the same?
Would you go as far as living with only 50 items in your home?
What then are the secrets to Simple Living?
These tips below help simplify your life by saving you TIME, EFFORT and MONEY.
Do you know our minds get tired if we make decisions all the time? To save our brain power, we need to simplify our decisions.
Spend more time on important matters.
For example, if you’re going to buy a home, devote more time to doing research and sleeping on it.
It may take up to 3 months, but that’s fine as this is a major decision that’ll impact your financial life.
We scoffed at this advice in our younger days as we thought we knew the facts.
Our house was bought in a week! On hindsight, it wasn’t a wise purchase as the main benefit was that we were near our friends. Not the best of reasons.

Do you agonize about what to wear most of the time?
Yes, we do want to create a good impression on others, but all the time?
An example is thinking about what we should wear on casual outings.
It doesn’t quite matter. Not unless you’re attending an important function.
A homeschooling mom shares her clever tip. If she likes a particular design top, she’ll buy the same top in different colors. She’s happy as it simplifies her life.
As a child, I’d watched my aunt getting ready for work.
That involved trying on different sets of outfits and flinging them away in disgust. Her whole wardrobe ended up on her bed before she was finally satisfied with her choice.
Thankfully, I’m not that obsessed with my appearance. Over the last couple of years, I’ve decided to go simple.
That means setting aside the same 3 tops and the same two pairs of pants for work.
I wear the same pair of shoes outdoors – my trusty Skechers. I’ve been wearing them every time I’m outdoors, as they’re comfortable and support my feet well. Have a look below.
Go for Quality
Always go for quality. When I was only buying ‘cheap’ things like cheap shoes, I ended up spending more effort, time and money.
I kept having to shop for another new pair of cheap shoes, as they never last.
Having used my same pair of Skechers for more than 3 years now, I can safely recommend that it’s worth every penny.
Learn to disregard others’ opinions of yourself. I’ve been guilty of worrying about what others think of me.
Do such concerns plague you too?
Am I annoying? Am I driving too slow for the car behind me? Every few seconds, I’d glance in the rear view mirror to have a look.
In trying to please others, I was miserable.
Trying to live up to someone else’s expectations is another one of them.
Or how about comparing myself unfavorably with others, who are always better than yours truly. Sounds familiar?
Avoid cluttering your thoughts with these unnecessary stressors. Putting yourself first is not being selfish. It’s looking after yourself.
On most days, I’ll have the same lunch:
2 eggs with bread, or tuna with bread, or avocado on bread.
I’ll either poach my eggs or fry them with a sprinkling of herbs.
My son has requested a different lunch. That’s absolutely fine. He has the option to choose different cans of tuna.
See, there’s no need to think too much. Just keep it simple.
We keep our snacks easy and simple.
Mr MMT never tires of the same muffin recipe, as long as I add raisins (his favorite), though to be honest I got tired of it myself.
So I keep to the same basic recipe and modify the recipe slightly, such as adding chocolate chips or cocoa powder.
I’ve made the same basic recipe so many times that I know it without reading the recipe. This really saves me time.
An hour before dinner, I’ll usually prepare some oranges for snacks. Yes, it’s usually oranges.
A great way to simplify your finances is to automate your payments. Just make sure you check your bank transactions once a fortnight.
You can read about how we learnt an important lesson here. Don’t make our mistake.
Another way to simplify your finances is to automate part of your savings.
Manually transfer larger sums – it’s satisfying to see the larger amounts accumulate.
Saves you time, effort and stress.
There’s no point in using multiple credit cards with different banks. Mr MMT and I have a joint credit card account so that it’s easier to track our spending.
Alright, I admit it.
Recently, I was sorely tempted to sign up with another bank as they were offering a cash bonus for new members. But the hassle of signing up for another card and remembering to cancel it later down the track puts me off.
I’d rather keep my finances streamlined.

You can choose to say these 5 things instead. But don’t do it because you have to; do it because you want to.
